Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is the idea or goal of producing AI that can be applied across all, or at least a wide range, of domains and problems. Early AI systems tended to be very specific in the kinds of problems they addressed based partly on their mode of reasoning and partly on their knowledge base. The use of deep learning and in particular large-language models has raised the possibility that these systems, currently relying on large volumes of human generated materials, may already be at the edge of AGI. Others disagree, especially as these systems are effectively reaching the limits of human-generated data and in the future will have to rely on some form of self learning.
